a poem and a book fair :)

April


In spring I can see myself so clearly - 

On the first of the month I say
rabbit, rabbit
to fend away evil,

my own heart thumping hot
as metal in the sun.
I press my face to the hood of my car
always surprised I don't come away burned.

I lift my face to that cruel blue
oh april! I love/hate you :(
I wind a golden ball of yarn - 
I use my knees and both hands

(half a spider's limbs;
we do the same work)

The wind takes away my silk
and almost every ounce of heat
I've gathered in the lee -
great stone at my back.

A little dog laps rainwater from it's dips
and I gather my little woolen star into my bag -
blazing and dense.

I turn my feet from april
and follow them, wending, home.

Happy April! Rabbit rabbit!

Today is also the start of National Poetry Month, which always ends up being the time of year when I come out of hibernation to write again and allow myself to PLAY again. This has been a particularly long, hard winter for me and my fam, and although April is still very much a transitional month here in Maine, I always feel myself loosening up and shaking off the dirt of my den. Like sap coursing up from the roots of a tree to feed the buds and branches, the words begin to flow a little more for me this time of year.

I want to give you a couple of little updates:

• I will be vending tomorrow (Sunday, the 2nd) from 10-3 at the Book Arts Bazaar at USM! This might be my favorite event of the year because everyone has been working on projects all winter that they get to share and there is a wonderful, joyful energy in the room :) You can check out some of my new projects I’ll have with me tomorrow below!

• I’ll also be updating my shop this week with my new goods (including bumper stickers!?) and I’ll send an email update when that is live, so keep an eye on your inbox.

• Also, I finished a quilt I’ve been working on for nearly 2 years! It was my first patchwork quilt (I’ve done a couple of whole cloth quilts in the past) and I’m so excited to be cozy and warm under it AS I TYPE THIS MISSIVE! I want to write a reflection about it soon. I’ll share finished photos once there is a sunny day that’s not too windy!
