All year I look at the ground, my vision blurring while a snake crosses my path. Nervous as a songbird, I watch a hawk fly off with a fluff of bird in its talons. I curl up on my bed, the grass, in brambles. I am a fawn. I am myself when I am alone. This is all I longed for, these wild moments. I watch and am watched. I am nature but I am apart from nature.
- excerpt from Attention
I’m so excited to finally be sharing my new book! It’s called Attention, and it’s a folio of writing from 2020. In that year I carried a little notebook with me on my walks and recorded everything I saw, big and small. It was an unintentional grounding exercise that kept me going during one of the most difficult periods in my life. The notes are compiled from my notebook and the notes app on my phone and are separated by month, beginning in March and ending in December. Almost every word was written outside - on dirt roads, in fields, in forests.

It’s been a labor of love (it’s the longest DIY print project I’ve done so far!) and I’m so happy it’s finally ready to be shared with you. One of my friends who read it early on said “it feels like the kind of thing i cannot be inside to read” (she went outside to read it again). Another friend said it was “solitary, brave and raw.”
SO! if you would also like to read it you can pick it up at one of the markets I’m doing this month or you can send a sliding scale payment* of $15-30 + $2 shipping to my venmo @mayaskylark and include your mailing address.
I’ll have copies of Attention at the following markets:
First Friday Pop Up Market TOMORROW! from 5-7pm at the Equality Community Center
Trunk Show at PortFiber this Saturday! 11-4:30pm
Friday Pop Up Market 12/16 from 5-7pm at the Equality Community Center
I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t get sick, so stay tuned on instagram for any last minute changes!
THANK YOU for reading and sharing!
take care xoxo

*A note on my payment style: sliding scale prices reflect the time, energy, and resources it takes to bring art into the world; the low end covers time and supplies (paper, ink, gas, etc.) and the high end supports me as a chronically ill artist as I navigate the world (food, bills, bread, roses). It’s very important to me to be able to offer my art at an affordable price while also allowing folks to pay a little more if they so desire/are able! Thank you for supporting me and my work! <3
It will break your heart, it will make you want to sweep some leaves, it will make you beam!!!
yay maya! cannot wait to read it <3 wish I could make it to an irl event!
